The year 2014 makes it 100 years the Northern and Southern Protectorates were amalgamated to form what is today called Nigeria, a country with over 250 ethnic nationalities with distinct socio-cultural ways of life.
No doubt, Nigeria is at a critical phase in its march towards greatness, particularly against the backdrop of the 2015 general elections fast approaching.
But suffice to say that the growing insecurity in the country, especially in the North East where Boko Haram holds sway, the seeming polarization of the North and South on critical issues at the on-going National Conference and the desperation being showed by politicians across party divides in the build-up towards the heavily anticipated 2015 general elections are issues that need to be properly addressed if indeed our unity in diversity is to be consolidated or face severe crack.
Despite continuous assurances by both the federal government and security agencies that the Boko Haram insurgency will soon be a thing of the past, the conflicting signals from the insurgents on their mode of operation, ceaseless and violent activities as well as their real intent-whether religious or political should really bother all right thinking Nigerians and indeed the global community.
More confusing is the seeming cross-road security agencies in the country are facing in tackling the rising wave of insurgency.
The wave of insecurity, increase in small arms and ammunition circulation as the situation suggests as well as the growing desperation of politicians ahead of the 2015 polls, as evident in states where the PDP is opposition is a major source of concern.
If the federal and state governments as well as other stakeholders fail to urgently tackle the growing insecurity in the country and check the do or die attitude of politicians at all levels of government, the 2015 elections and indeed our collective unity in diversity may become a mirage.
