Exclusive: Survey reveals drop in demand for biros, due to the advent of smart phones

A survey carried out by Fresh Angle International, Friday October 15, by interviewing small scale business owners at Ekurede Itsekiri and Ugbori in Warri, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, has revealed a drop in the demand for biros and notepads in the last five years, as a result of the increasing use of Android and other smartphones.

Petty traders told This Newspaper that they only use biro for documentation of their daily sales, occasionally buy it (biro) for their children and wards in school as well as the few occasions they have to go to the banking halls for personal transactions.

While owner of a supermarket, Madam Tosan Ajuremisan, acknowledged a sharp drop in the demand for biros and notepads in the last three years due to the use of smartphones, Mrs. Sholuwa Gloria Toju, who owns a provision shop, differed, saying the demand for biros remain the same in the last three years, with increase sales during the beginning of new academic terms.

A smartphone repairer, Kingsley Cyprian, stated: “I hardly buy Biro for the past five years”, whilst Mrs. Ana Emiko Oghomienor, (A.K.A Mama T) who owns a super-shop, averred: “Demand for Biro is reasonably high during school resumption, but drops afterwards”.

Seller of lubricants, Blessing Agbogidi, said her demand for biro despite using smartphone remains the same, because she uses biro for taking notes of her daily sales. Her position was corroborated by a Chemist, Mr. Matthew Onifade and owner of Happy Hour Bar, Omasan Lawuru - Amorighoye, saying, they still purchase Biro as before for daily recording of their business activities.

Mr. Oritseweyinmi Bobby Etsano, who owns Breakthrough Barbers Shop, within the same neighbourhood, stated: “My demand for Biro and notepad has dropped for the past five years, no connection to the use of smartphone, because I am accountable to myself, hence I don’t take notes of patronage”.

Warri Based Social Commentator and Community Development Activist, Prince David Odell, opened-up: “My demand for biro has dropped, since the advent of Android and other smartphones”.

Engr. Mofe Nobi, said: “My use of biro has dropped, but I still use it during transactions in banking halls and occasionally buy biros, because of my children going to school”, while. Mr. Yinka Moradeyo, owner of D. Yankee Collections, enthused: “It (biro) has dropped for more than five years as a result of my use of smartphone”.
