The Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Engr. Austin Oniwon has assured Nigerians that the current poor power supply being experience nationwide would soon be over.
He held that the current shortage of gas supply to Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) was being addressed seriously by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Speaking to newsmen at the Chanomi Creeks shortly after inspecting the Warri/Escravos Gas Pipeline being handled by FENOG Nigeria Limited, Engr. Oniwon who was represented by the Group Executive Director, Power and Gas of NNPC, Dr. David Ige said that the completion of all ongoing gas pipelines would boost power supply nationwide and gave FENOG Nigeria Limited a pat on the back for rising to the occasion.
He said; “We started this site visit on Wednesday, April 4, we have visited the Escravos/Lagos Gas Pipeline system which is a major back bone pipeline in supplying gas to most of the pipelines in the country. We are impressed with the progress we are making on that pipeline scheduled for the completion within four weeks from now. With that pipeline, we would have put in place a permanent solution to the challenge of gas supply to Olorunsogo and hopefully that we increase generating capacity by about 400 mega watts in the country, and once we are done with that, there will be steady power supply in the country.”
According to him; “We are doing a significant work to make that happen and also we have completed the pipeline between Oben and Geregwu. The beauty of all that we are not just addressing the power problem but we are addressing a wider gas industrialization problem.”
“As you can see this is being deliver 100 per cent by indigenous company, FENOG and you can see the quality of the equipment that we have seen here, this is world class equipment, this is a perfect example of the kind of synergy we see between the agenda of the Gas and Oil sector as well as the Local content for the empowerment of our people,” he said.
According to him “FENOG is purely indigenous as you can see and with this kind of experience we believe that we are now having indigenous company that can drill any kind of pipe in the country. We didn’t have these capabilities before. Not only we are going to celebrate this in our effort to improve gas supply to power, but we should also be celebrating the success of our own indigenous and our own people in this sector in the oil Pipeline process.”
The NNPC boss stated “The good examples of what we have done is to work closely with FENOG and as many other local companies that are able to demonstrate capability to deliver, we are willing to work with them. NNPC if you recall, championed initially the local content agenda because we believe that for the long time survival of our own company as well as the industry at large, it is important that we begin to domicile capability in Nigeria and so we will be able to support any indigenous company like we have done with FENOG; FENOG is not just a contractor any more, FENOG is a partner to Nigeria Gas company (NGC) and to NNPC and that is the kind of relationship that we are going to be building with other indigenous companies that are ready to work with us.”
The Executive Director of FENOG Nigeria Limited, Mr. Matthew Tonlagha commended the Federal Government, NNPC and NGC for giving his firm the opportunity through the local content act to prove it worth.
He assured that the Chanomi Gas Pipeline Crossing would be delivered by FENOG Nigeria Limited as planned.
Dr. Ige had earlier visited the Gbaramatu Monarch, His Royal Majesty, Godwin K. Bebenimibo, DSP (Rtd), JP, Ogeh, Gbaran III, Aketekpe, Agadagba, the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom in his palace at Oporoza where he told him that directive has been given for the provision of electricity and water in his kingdom.
