The Niger Delta Indigenous Movement for Radical Change, NDIMRC has warned President Goodluck Jonathan against delay in the take-off of the Brass LNG project in Bayelsa State.
The group equally called for the sack of the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Managing Director of Brass LNG and the Group Executive Director, Gas and Power of NNPC, alleging that they were frustrating the smooth take-off of the Brass LNG.
The group in a press statement signed by its President, Nelly Emma, Secretary, John Sailor and Public Relations Officer, Mukoro Stanley, expressed worry over the delay in the take-off of the project and urged President Jonathan to act fast on it.
They gave 21-day ultimatum within which the NNPC boss should explain to Nigerians when the project will be kick started and threatened that; “But failure to do this, we will mobilize and shut down all on-going gas projects in Niger Delta region.”
According to the group, a successful kick-off of the Brass LNG project would create jobs for Nigerians and reduce growing tension in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
The group said if the success of the Amnesty Programme must be sustained by the President, then there should be no further delay in the execution of the Brass LNG project.
The press statement read in part; “Our findings have revealed that the Group Managing Director of NNPC, the Managing Director of Brass LNG and the Group Executive Director, Gas and Power of NNPC are doing everything to direct the gas in the Niger Delta region to Ogun state.”
According to him, “This is unacceptable to us and we hereby call on President Jonathan to sack them now. The NNPC boss should also address the nation immediately and tell us when the Brass LNG will start.”
The group added, “We are not comfortable with the delay in the execution of the much talked about Brass LNG project. We want to say that delay is dangerous. The Brass LNG project is capable of generating millions of jobs for restive youths in the Niger Delta region and will also lead to the rapid development of the region hence we are urging President Jonathan not to waste further time in jump starting the project,”
“We are more worried in the sense that many of our ex-militants now undergoing various trainings in different parts of the world may not get a place to work at the end of their training if the Brass LNG did not get off the ground now,” the group wrote.
According to the group also; “If our ex-militants must not go back to the creeks again at the end of their successful training abroad, then the Federal Government should act fast on the Brass LNG project capable of taking many of our youths off the streets. The execution and successful completion of the Brass LNG project will bring the needed peace and development in the Niger Delta region and this is why we are appealing that all issues delaying its take-off should be resolved as soon as possible by the Federal Government.”
“We make bold to say that the final success of the Amnesty programme depends largely on the take-off of the Brass LNG project. The Federal Government should not waste the huge investment in the training of our ex-militants without providing them jobs in a place like the Brass LNG project and we implore the President to make the Brass LNG project his top priority and anybody standing on its way should be fired. The transformation agenda of President Jonathan is incomplete without the Brass LNG. Our indigenous firms have also built up capacity over the years to take on the Brass LNG project. We therefore call for a quick take-off of the Brass LNG project for the betterment of all as we will not hesitate to mobilise and shut down all gas pipelines in the country if immediate action is taken to get Brass LNG project off the ground," the group stated.
