A renowned Civil Engineer and Head of Department of Architecture, University of Benin, Prof. Nathaniel .A. Aniekwu and Engr. James Akanmu of BPP have identified broadening of Civil Engineering curriculum in the universities and other tertiary institutions to include commercial as well as financial skills, networking with all stakeholders, including the political class as veritable tools for sustainable infrastructural development.
The University Don, Prof. Nathaniel .A. Aniekwu and the Head, Training, Research and Strategic Planning, Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP, Engr. James Akanmu, both made the assertion Saturday September 19, 2015 in Effurun, Delta State during the first annual public lecture and seminar with the theme, “The Civil Engineer And The Emerging Nigerian Economy” organized by the Warri Chapter of Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, NICE.
While noting that urban population is expected to jump by more than 1.3 billion over the next two decades in the developing world, Prof. Aniekwu challenged Civil Engineers to see the bad state of roads, epileptic power supply and collapsing structures in the country as opportunities to excel in their career.
He declared that Julius Berger PLC came into Nigeria with the support of German government and appealed for government support in the quest by domestic engineering firms to take up bigger engineering jobs.
The National Chairman of Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, NICE, Engr. Robbie James Owivry in a message through Engr. Ahmed Mustapha stressed that sister Engineering Institutions should be the engine room of Nigerian Society of Engineers, even as he described NICE as a leading Institution in the Engineering Profession.
Our Correspondent reports that the Permanent Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Delta State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. (Mrs.) Caroline Ajuyah and President, Project Management Institute, PMI, Nigeria Chapter also spoke on how Civil Engineers can take their rightful place in the emerging Nigerian Economy.
Highpoints of the seminar were the presentation of awards to Engineers who have distinguished themselves in their career, presentation of certificate to registered students of Civil Engineering as well as the formal handover of the Warri Branch Chairmanship of NICE by Engr. Donald C. Okeke to Engr. Igbinidu Valentine.
