The Delta State and Central Zone Chairman of Nigeria Maritime Workers’ Union, Seamen Branch under Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Comrade Boro Ekotoro has declared that owners of vessels in the coastal areas of the country, especially Delta, Edo Anambra and Ondo States must place priority on the engagements of indigenous people in line with the Local Content Act.
Comrade Ekotoro made the declaration Tuesday October 13 at Effurun, Delta State shortly before inaugurating a new 15-man executive to pilot the affairs of Ilaje Seafarers Association.
While stressing that it is the responsibility of Maritime Workers’ Union to ensure that the welfare of maritime workers are adequately taken care of , the Seafarers boss warned that anyone caught flouting the NIMASA Act of 2007 will be persecuted so as to ensure the operations of Seafarers fall within global professional standard.
He advised the new leadership of Ilaje Seafarers to exhibit the highest sense of professionalism in the discharge of their assignment.
The new Ilaje Seafarers which is chaired by Comrade Ododoyuge Adebanjo, has Comrade Maha Peter as Vice Chairman and Comrade Egbowon Rapheal as Secretary.
Our Senior Correspondent reports that other members of the 15-man executive are: Ayanfe Zeblon-Assistant Secretary, Onikan Andrew-Coordinator, Aseluwa Oluwarokanmi- PRO, Egbonon Sunny-Assistant Coordinator, Enikijomehin Gideon-Treasurer, Atimise Adekunle, Eyekole Sule, Obazuaye Thick, Obakpolor Papa, Temidunmi Ndeyemi, Iyakpo Bayo and Erunkuebami Ali.
