Community vigilante, police detain nine for wandering

Four indigenes of Aladja Community and 5 others from Egini and Ovwian are in police custody following their controversial arrest by the Police in Ovwian in collaboration with Udu Central Vigilante, Fresh Angle can authoritatively report.

An indigene of Aladja Community who dropped the hint on condition of anonymity, said the suspects were arrested for wandering at about 8pm in Egini, Ovwian and Aladja communities on Saturday August 4 by a combined team of the Police and Udu Central Vigilante led by one Prosper Erhinyoja.

According to the source, the suspects were later taken to the Area Command of the Nigerian Police “A” Division in Warri.

Three of the suspects, who are indigenes of Aladja community, Vakpor Ajifie, Monday Ajifie and Johwo were released 2 days later after paying between ten to twenty thousand naira as bail, while the remaining ones are being branded as criminals and subsequently denied bail.

Fresh Angle can also report that as at on Wednesday August 8, when leaders of the various communities visited the Area Command of the Nigerian Police Station in Warri to identify and possibly release their indigenes, the police still denied them bail.

Some of those still in police custody as at the time of this report are: Junior Aaron, Panama Lucky, Kevwe Solomon and Kevwe Godwin.

The Area Commander who had earlier told the National Coordinator, Forum for Justice and Human Rights Defence, Barr. Oghenejabor Ikimi on phone that he was not in town at about 9am Wednesday August 8 was seen at about 11am same day on one of their patrol vans around the command.

Attempts by Fresh Angle to speak with authorities of the Area Command were unsuccessful as they declined comments.
