THE Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka has made a major break-through in accreditation of its programmes as the National Universities Commission, NUC, has scored the institution 95.3% in the exercise for accreditation of academic programmes carried out in March/April 2012.
Our Correspondent reports that the 95.3%accreditation score of DELSU was obtained from full accreditation status earned in 40 degree programmes namely, Medicine & Surgery, Nursing Science,Physiology, Pharmacology, Basic Medical Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry,Industrial Mathematics, Mathematics, Microbiology Agriculture, Forestry &Wildlife, Music, Theatre Arts, Linguistics, French, English & Literary Studies,Agricultural Science Education, Biology Education, Business Education,Chemistry Education, Computer Science Education, Economics Education, Geography Education, Health Education, Home Economics Education, Integrated Science,Mathematics Education, Physical Health Education, Physics Education, Political Science Education, Social Studies Education, Technical Education, English Education, Fine Arts Education, French Education, History Education, Music Education, Religious Studies Education, Nursery & Primary Education and interim status earned in 1 programme namely Physics Education.
According to feelers from the institution, only 2 Programmes namely, Accounting & Finance and Computer Science were denied out of the 43that were due and reviewed in the 2012 accreditation exercise in Delta State University.
Deputy Executive Secretary of NUC in a signed document said,“the National Universities Commission NUC has the statutory mandate to accredita cademic programmes in all National Universities. Pursuant to this mandate and in consonance with the provisions of the current Government approved guidelines, initial accreditation of a new programme is held after the programme has run for two academic session following approval for the establishment of the programme. Thereafter, the Commission visits the approved programmes as and when they fall due.”
According to the document also, “full accreditation status is valid for a period of five years, interim accreditation status is valid for two years after which the programmes will be revisited and denied accreditation status.”
