Ahead of the forthcoming Urhobo Progress Union, UPU Congress slated for December 2016 where a new UPU President-General and other members of the executive will be elected, the Ovie of Olomu Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Richard Layeguen, Ogbon Ogoni I (JP), the Owhorode of Olomu Kingdom has cautioned those vying for the position of President-General of UPU and other elective positions to emulate past leaders of the body in order for the body to take its place in the comity of Nations.
Our Delta Central Correspondent reports that the Olomu Monarch gave the advice Tuesday November 8 at the meeting of the Ivies of Urhobo kingdoms which held at his palace in Olomu, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The Ovie said those to occupy the exalted position of UPU President-General should be ready to serve Urhobo Nation with their talent, time and energy the way past leaders like late Chief Mukoro Mowoe and late Chief T.E.E. Sanubi did. He said:” I wish to place on record that if the purpose of occupying any position in UPU is to amass wealth and not to work for the unity of Urhobo, the person should forget about it”.
On the absence of UPU President-General, Chief Joe Omene at the meeting, Ogbon Ogoni I (JP), said many people saw it as a slight on the generality of the Ivies, while others said the President-General may be preoccupied with other activities.
On his part, the President-General of Agbarho Improvement Union, Sir John Gbenedion said, the Urhobo would not want persons who do not have regard for Urhobo Nation to occupy any position, saying the positions are meant for those who have respect for constituted authority.
He said: “if you don’t have respect for the people you rule, then you are not fit to occupy any position in UPU. Chief Omene knows why he was not present in the meeting for the second time, it is not for the best interest of Urhobo as a whole. Urhobo Nation is owned by the Ivies”.
Other speakers include the President-General of Umiaghwa Abraka Kingdom, Charles Ojarhikre and President-General of Agbon Kingdom, Pastor Akporaro Johnson.
