Don’t pass Buhari’s 2017 budget, N/Delta group urges National Assembly
Dr. Bukola Saraki

As controversy continues to trail the 2017 budget estimate presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari, a group, Niger Delta Patriotic Front, NDPF has enjoined the National Assembly not to pass the proposed appropriation, saying projects hitherto initiated by previous Federal administrations in Itsekiri land were not captured in the 2017 fiscal estimate.

National Coordinator of Niger Delta Patriotic Front, Prince David Odeli who made the call during a press briefing in Warri, Tuesday December 20, stated that key people- centred projects in Warri South, Warri North and Warri South-West Local Government Areas such as Ugborodo Electrification, Ogheye/Dimegun Shore Protection, Benin River Electrification initiated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, upgrade of Koko Seaport, Construction of Gelegele Seaport, Omadino/Okerenghigho/Ugborodo Coastal Road as well as the Koko-Ogheye-Lekki Coastal Road Project were not captured in the proposed 2017 appropriation despite the oil rich nature of the affected areas.

The NDPF Coordinator, Prince David Odeli declared, “the proposed 2017 budget is another indication that the Buhari administration is not serious about developing the oil and gas rich Niger Delta region.”

“Why can’t Mr. President take advantage of the relative peace in the Niger Delta to carry out massive infrastructural development of the region by mobilizing reputable multinational construction companies like Julius Berger PLC,” Odeli queried.
