The Vice Chancellor of Dominican University-Ibadan, DUI, Prof. Jacinta Opara, has charged Senior Administrative and Academic Staff of the University to be leaders of change, innovation and knowledge creation, saying as senior staff of the institution, they hold a special responsibility in embodying the ideals of ethical and effective leadership.

Fresh Angle International, can report that Prof. Opara gave the charge Thursday October 3 during the Seminar/Orientation Programme held for Senior Administrative and Academic Staff at Dominican University, Ibadan.

Whilst noting that it is only through collaborative efforts, that DUI will continue to build a robust academic environment, Prof. Opara, averred: “Unlike corporate or political leadership, academic leadership calls for intellectual guidance, empathy, and the nurturing of future leaders.”

She stated: “Dominican University has a proud tradition of academic excellence, ethical leadership, and commitment to service, and this programme aligns with our mission to foster growth and enhance the quality of leadership across our university.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude for your presence and active participation. It is through collaborative efforts such as this that we continue to build a robust academic environment, and I am confident that the knowledge you will gain today will enrich both your professional and personal experiences.

“Importance of Leadership in Academia Leadership is a core element in academic settings, but it takes on a unique dimension in higher education. Unlike corporate or political leadership, academic leadership calls for intellectual guidance, empathy, and the nurturing of future leaders. We are not only leaders of our departments or units; we are leaders of change, innovation, and knowledge creation.

“The senior administrative and academic staff hold a special responsibility in embodying the ideals of ethical and effective leadership. As you know, leadership within the academic space requires us to constantly balance innovation with tradition, academic freedom with responsibility, and autonomy with accountability. You are all trailblazers in this respect, helping to drive this university toward greater excellence.

“To lead effectively, we must first understand what leadership means in our context. Leadership is not about power or authority—it is about influence, vision, and the ability to inspire those around you. It is the process of enabling others to act and succeed. As leaders in our university, our task is to empower our colleagues, students, and staff, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to our collective success.

“Attributes of Effective Leadership

As you assume or continue in your roles, there are several attributes of effective leadership that I would like to highlight today:

1. Vision and Strategic Thinking: A leader must have a clear vision for their department and the institution. This vision should align with the broader goals of the university, driving innovation, research, and community engagement.

2. Communication and Transparency: Effective leadership is founded on open lines of communication. By ensuring that decisions, challenges, and successes are shared transparently, you will foster trust and collaboration among your colleagues.

3. Empathy and Inclusiveness: A leader must understand the diverse needs and challenges of their team members. Inclusiveness means valuing every individual and creating an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

4. Adaptability: The world is changing, and higher education is evolving rapidly. Leaders must be willing to adapt to new teaching methods, technologies, and organizational structures, ensuring that the university remains at the forefront of academic excellence.

5. Ethical Decision-Making: Integrity should guide all decisions. As senior leaders, it is our responsibility to ensure that our actions reflect the ethical standards of this institution and inspire others to uphold these values.

“These leadership qualities, when cultivated and nurtured, will not only benefit your professional life but also the lives of those you serve. Remember, leadership is about service—it is about putting the needs of others before your own and leading with compassion, understanding, and fairness.

“Community Service: The Role of Universities in Society

The second key theme of today’s program is community service. Dominican University, from its inception, has held community engagement as a pillar of its philosophy. As academics and administrators, we must look beyond the confines of our campus and engage meaningfully with the world around us. Community service should be viewed not as an obligation but as a vital expression of the university’s mission to contribute to societal growth and development.

Community service allows us to extend our knowledge, expertise, and resources to benefit the wider community. Whether it is through research that addresses local challenges, outreach programs that educate and empower, or partnerships with industry and government, the university plays a central role in shaping the future of our society.

Over the years, Dominican University has established a range of initiatives that bridge the gap between academia and society. Some examples include:

“Collaborative Research Projects: Our researchers have worked hand-in-hand with community organizations to address local challenges, such as sustainable agriculture, healthcare, and educational reform.

“Outreach Programs: We have partnered with schools and local governments to provide educational programs, leadership training, and support services that enhance the lives of those in our immediate and extended communities.

“Service-Learning Initiatives: Our students have the opportunity to engage in service-learning programs that allow them to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges, reinforcing the university’s commitment to producing well-rounded, socially responsible graduates. Each of you has a role to play in furthering these efforts. As leaders in your departments, you can inspire your colleagues and students to become active participants in these community engagements. Let us encourage a culture where service is not just an additional activity but an integral part of the university’s identity.

As we reflect on the roles of leadership and community service, I want to remind you that the impact you make extends far beyond the walls of this institution.
