Gender-Based Violence:  VC, FUL, Assures of Equity for Both Male, Female Child


The Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi has assured that both male and female students of the institution would continue to receive equal rights and opportunities in course of their academic pursuits.

 

Professor Akinwumi gave the assurance while addressing Students of the University during the awareness campaign rally on Gender-Based Violence, held at the Felele main Campus of the institution on Monday.

 

The event was organised by the Institute of Gender Studies of the Federal University, Lokoja in commemoration of the 16 days activism of violence against girl child.

 

Our Kogi State Correspondent, reports that the Vice Chancellor who was represented by his Deputy, Professor Mohammed Suleiman Audu, said that the management of the University would not tolerate any form of discrimination against either male or female students

 

"What you are agitating for, has already been taken care of by the University which even led to the establishment of Institute of Gender Studies in the institution.

 

"We will continue to ensure the protection of both male and female child against any form of violence" the VC further promised.

 

He said that the university is 100% in support of the students safety, success and wellbeing.

 

Earlier, Professor Ofure Aito, Head of the Institute of Gender Studies at the Federal University, Lokoja, stated that the main objective of the rally was to raise awareness about the prevalence of Gender-Based Violence, its impact on individuals and society, and to promote a culture of respect, equality and inclusivity

 

"Our aim is to create a safe and supportive community where everyone can thrive without violence or harassment" she explained.

 

Highpoint of the event was "March and Rally to promote unity, solidarity through various faculties of the University"

 

Participating students were seen carrying placards with inscription "Rise against sexual harassment, oppression, extortions and bullying. Speak up against violence, report cases of violence and support survivors".
