Our Bomadi Correspondent reports that the boy who died after six days of intensive care at the General Hospital, Bomadi was caught up in the inferno along with his 5-year old sibling, Liberty Akpokabowei and his 28-year old mother, Mrs. Akpokabowei Helen who is presently at Our Saviour Clinic, Bomadi.
The mother, Mrs. Akpokabowei Helen sobbed while speaking to journalists over the loss of her child, explaining that it was about 8:00pm while refilling her lantern with kerosene that suddenly there was an explosion which according to her sounded like a bomb. According to her, she and her two children who were at a close distance were caught up by the flame while her husband, Mr. Akpokabowei Boukazi was away.
Her neighbours and passersby who were attracted by Mrs. Akpokabowei Helen’s yelling for help ran to the scene, battled to put out the flames and stop the fire from spreading to household properties.
The victims were immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Bomadi after first aid treatment on anti blisters were applied. They were later transferred to Our Saviour Clinic after the 3-year old died.
The Medical Director of the clinic, Dr. Tudo Ebi who received the victims described the condition of Mrs. Akpokabowei as bad, explaining that she is being treated for 2nd degree burns which consumed “45-47 percent of her body”.
He however noted that he has since brought her to a stable condition. Dr. Ebi who lamented the spate of kerosene explosion in the country, advised the public to beware of killer kerosene.
Incidences of kerosene explosion which have killed several people have become common in Bomadi and its neighbouring towns and villages in recent times as a result of adulterated kerosene which is sold in the area.
