Udu youths call off 14-day ultimatum to PSML

The 14-day ultimatum handed the management of Premium Steel and Mines Limited, PSML, the new investors in former Delta Steel Company Ovwian-Aladja by Udu Youths under the aegis of the UPU Youth Wing, Udu Kingdom chapter has been called off following resolutions from series of meetings between the company management and the youths, with the youths urging staff of the company to go about their duties without fear of molestation or attack of any kind.

Rising from an emergency meeting of the youth body on Saturday May 20, 2017 at Otor-Udu, headquarters of Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, the youths in a statement released to newsmen and signed by Comrade Sunday Subi, President and Dr. Dennis Kpomah, Secretary affirmed that the issues that prompted the ultimatum were already being addressed by the company and that with the concern, maturity and corporate sense of responsibility demonstrated by PSML since the youths raised concern over employment-related grievances, ‘’we have no option but to cooperate with the company, call off the ultimatum and urge all Udu and Urhobo people to support Premium Steel and Mines Limited to achieve the laudable objective of resuscitating the moribund steel plant in the best interest of all stakeholders’’, the statement said.

The statement added that the youths were pleased with the way the Chief Executive Officer of Premium Steel, Mr. Prasanta Mishra had demonstrated appreciable concern with the plight of the host communities, adding that from the way he was addressing the issues raised by the youths so far, there was hope that Udu people and Urhobo in general would have reasons to celebrate soon, urging all to cooperate with the new investors to ensure DSC is brought back to life shortly.  

"We have had useful and very meaningful discussions all pointing in the direction of corporate understanding and mutual respect for the request of the host communities. We are pleased with the negotiations so far. We have called off the ultimatum. There shall be no need to picket the plant as planned but rather we have reasons to join hands with Premium Steel to ensure DSC is revived as soon as possible’’, they youths declared.

Recall that about two weeks ago, Udu youths had issued a 14-day ultimatum to PSML calling for a meeting between ‘’management of PSML and Udu leaders like the Udu Traditional Council and the Union of Udu Communities for an MOU containing details of stakes in the plant by all stakeholders and that the company should reserve key positions like the CSO, Chief Engineer, Human Resources Manager, Company Secretary for Urhobo people; labour contracts are to be handled by Urhobo people, 70% of skilled labour should be given to Urhobo people and all outstanding obligations to contractors should be met’’.

The youths had in their statement affirmed that all the issues raised were already being attended to prompting the need to call off the ultimatum in the interest of peace.
