Contrary to the position of Dino Melaye, the Senator representing Kogi West at the National Assembly that he will mobilize lawmakers in the state to commence impeachment process against Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello over his alleged involvement in INEC double registration, members of Kogi State House of Assembly have declared that they cannot be coerced to go against the 1999 constitution “which restrain them from investigating electoral process”.
Our Kogi State Correspondent reports that at a press briefing on Tuesday May 30 in Lokoja, members of the State legislature led by the Majority Leader, Hon. Mathew Kolawole (APC) Kabba Bunu, averred that they are not robotic institution that can be influenced by external body unduly.
Kolawole observed that the recent call by Senator Melaye for the impeachment proceeding against the governor “is an insult to the constitution”.
According to Kolawole, the issue of alleged irregular registration of Alhaji Yahaya Bello does not lie in the hands of the Assembly to act upon.
He asserted, “it is only the electoral activities at the local government level that falls within our jurisdictions even that, INEC still takes care of the registration of voters for council elections. The qualification for registration under the electoral act, 2010 (as amended) section 12 (2) & (3) to our mind does not give any power unto this Honourable House to act. In that, this House does not possess judicial powers”.
Ahmed Ahmed (APC) Ankpa 1, added that the lawmakers can only begin such impeachment process when the Assembly find the executive wanting in gross misconduct.
