The Delta State government has concluded arrangements to merge primary schools within the same premises with effect from the new academic session starting this September with a view to streamlining academic and administrative activities in the schools.
This much was disclosed Thursday September 5 in Warri by the executive chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Mrs. Pat Ejeteh during a stake-holders meeting of local education secretaries, teachers and non academic staff of primary schools in Delta South Senatorial district.
According to the SUBEB boss, the merger of the schools which is coming after similar exercise in secondary schools in the state will affect existing schools in the same compound, while headship of the merged schools will be based solely on seniority, thus leaving former heads of the collapsed schools working as assistant head teachers to the most senior head teacher in the same premises.
While warning teachers of public primary schools not to collect levies from parents and pupils in line with the state government free education policy, Mrs. Ejeteh disclosed that any teacher that has spent more than four years in a school should be ready for reposting.
She noted that desk payment to cross-check credentials of primary school staff in the state before payment will be authorized would soon commence in a bid to check ghost workers.
The SUBEB Chairman who enjoined primary school staff in the state to up-date their IT knowledge with a view to meeting up with modern facilities provided by the state government for teaching and learning, decried the non teaching of physical education in public schools.
She revealed plans by SUBEB to organize a 13-week cluster school training programmes which will see only teachers working within the same area attending. According to her, the trainings will hold on weekends or after school hours so as not to interrupt academic programmes and will be attended by 50 teachers per training.
The one-day stakeholders meeting which was attended by teaching and non teaching staff of primary schools in Delta South senatorial district was facilitated by local educational authority, Warri South local government and it witnessed briefings by key officials of the state universal basic education board.
