The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Delta State says it has registered a total of 71,039 persons from April to July 2017 in the State and warned against multiple registrations.
INEC Administrative Secretary in the State, Mrs. Rose Oriaran Anthony at a media conference held in Asaba Monday July 24 told journalists that in the 71, 039 new registrants, 39749 was males and 31290 females, saying that voters’ registration as part of a normal process in democracy cannot be over emphasized.
According to her, while the registration exercise continues, it is hoped that the people will co-operate with the commission in its commitment with a view to making the 2019 exercise a huge success.
She explained that eligibility for Continuous Voter Registration, CVR is an exercise meant for the registration of Nigerian citizens who turned 18, adding, those who could not register in the previous exercises, should register at the registration centres closer to them.
Mrs Orian opined, “the 71, 039 released might be reduced if multiple registration is discovered, INEC warns that anybody who double registered will not have his/her name in the Voters’ lists or will be disfranchised”.
The INEC boss further explained that a person who had relocated to another place outside the unit he/she registered cannot vote in their new location unless a transfer is made, adding that transfer is currently built into the ongoing exercise.
Noting various challenges of distance and riverine terrain faced by some eligible registrants in accessing the registration centres at the INEC Local Government Offices, Mrs. Oriaran Anthony disclosed that the commission recently approved twelve additional registration centres in the State and reiterated that the CVR exercise has not ended as speculated in many quarters in the State, rather the commission after the first quarters, embark on house cleansing to ensure correct PVCS are printed.
She called on Deltans to avail themselves the opportunity in the display of names provided by the commission to cross check that their names, ages, address PUs including other details are well captured as it is the only opportunity to raise any objection to any mistakes, if any.
