Chairman of the Executive Committee, “Okere Gather”, Sunny Esu has disclosed that the annual celebration of “Okere Gather” in Warri has become an annual carnival of the people in Warri, Delta State.

Sunny Esu said the annual “Okere Gather” is to identify some of the challenges facing the community in order to tackle them headlong.

According to him, one of the major challenges in Okere in 2017 was drug abuse, hence the theme of the 2017 edition which was tagged “Say no to drug abuse”.

He appealed to all Okere sons and daughters as well as friends and well-wishers to identify with them, noting that “Okere Gather” is apolitical, irrespective of tribe, religion and political background of intending members.

According to Esu, anyone who wants to become member, should approach any member of the group, adding that membership is free.

He appreciated the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Warri, for coming to sensitize the people, especially the youths on the effects of drug abuse, while noting that the youths must be reshaped to focus on the right direction in order to have a better society.

The “Okere Gather” Chairman, Sunny Esu commended donors, members, Okere people and fiends for their support, promising that 2018 edition will be greater.

Highpoints of the three-day event include: hot eba competition and display of ethnic dishes, old school dress competition, motivational talk by some resource persons, endurance walk and novelty football match between Okere and Ugbuwangue communities, Warri.
