The Centre for Information Technology and Development, CITAD, says social media platforms in Nigeria are gradually becoming unfavorable to women and girls, “because of the harassment, bullying, insults and denigration they are exposed to”.

The Coordinator, Countering Hate Speech Project, Centre for Information Technology and Development, CITAD, Hamza Ibrahim, raised the concern Monday September 16, during a news conference held in Lokoja, Kogi State.

Hamza Ibrahim expressed worries that the remarks of some social media users in Nigerian are becoming a big challenge, because of their pseudo effect, stressing that the remarks may be undermining the resolve for peace, unity and tolerance amongst people of different tribes, political affiliation, gender and religious backgrounds.

He said between August 20 and September 10 this year, a survey by CITAD tracked 138 hate speeches and violence against women online, adding that the organization is Countering Hate Speeches in Nigeria with support from National Democratic Institute, NDI.

Ibrahim called on social media users to be sensitive to Nigeria’s diversity and shun hate speeches as well as online violence against women.

Our Kogi State Correspondent reports that the Country Director of National Democratic Institute, NDI, Barr. Ray Esebagbon, had identified fake news, hate speech and disinformation as major threats to Nigeria’s democracy as a whole and participation of women in politics in particular.
