People of Okere Community in Warri South Local Government have appealed to Delta State government through its Adhoc Committee on Environmental Sanitation to come to their aid by opening up the Okere River to avert epidemic and flooding in Warri.
Image Maker of Okere Community, Hon. David Eyitemi Oki who spoke to Fresh Anglein an exclusive chat in Warri on behalf of the community disclosed that the Olare-Aja (head) of Okere, Ogieboro E.F.Esisi had earlier this year written to the state government on the need to urgently open up the river which has been blocked by refuse and water hyacinth for over a year, but there has been no response yet.
Hon. Oki appealed to the State Special Adhoc Committee on Environmental Sanitation headed by the State Deputy Governor, Prof. Amos Utuama to extend its on-going clean up of Warri, Effurun and Udu metropolis to Okere Community River, adding that efforts by youths of the community to check indiscriminate dumping of refuse at the river has been frustrated by a lunatic and other persons who dump refuse in the river at night.
According to Hon. Oki, 90% of water channels in Warri urban has link to Okere River which empties its bank on Warri River, noting that failure to open up the river which was last done by the state government two years ago will cause epidemic and heavy flooding in Warri as the rains set in.
He appealed to the state government to prevail on the contractor handling the Ajamimogha- Mabiaku link road to go back to site so as to help in decongesting the rising traffic in Warri and stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse along the collapsed bridge area.
