Stakeholders blame failure of families for increase in crime, drug abuse

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Delta State Command, SP Edafe Bright, the National Social Secretary, National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Comr. Atsuwete Oluwasegun Toristeju and other critical stakeholders, have blamed increase in crime, drug abuse, cultism and other social vices perpetuated by youths, on the failure of families.

They stressed the need for schools to instill discipline in the children and reorient them, while government should ensure that those who commit crime, face punishment for their actions, saying it will reduce crime by 40 to 50%.  

Our Co-Publisher/ Managing Editor, reports that this much was canvassed Monday August 10 at Osubi Town Hall in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, during the launch of a State-Wide Campaign against Cultism, Drug Abuse and other crimes in the society.

Speaking on the theme; ‘Your life Matters and the lives of others also Matter, Say no to crime’ the PPRO Delta State Police Command, SP Edafe Bright, emphasized that drug abuse, cultism and other social vices, are due to the failure of parents to identify involvement of their children and wards at early stage and promptly deal it.

According to him, the consequences of drugs abuse are; HIV, BP, damage to body organs, depression, which can lead to suicide, loss of job, family disintegration, prostitution and accident.

Delta State Commander of Anti-Cult Volunteer Corps, Comr. Emmanuel Abiror, who was represented by Amb. Emmanuel Inaemeke and the Head, Department of Gender Justice, Comr. Osandatunwa Priscilla, explained that Anti-cult was formed to work with the police, DSS, the Military, other security agencies and the female arm of Nigerian Bar Association.

Comr. Osandatunwa, disclosed that the female arm of Nigerian Bar Association, handles cases such as child abuse and human trafficking, in collaboration with the gender Justice Department.

Human Right Activist and Board of Trustee member, Anti-cult Volunteer Corps, Comr. Umukoro Efemena, spoke on the roles of human right activists, just as the Campaign Banner and signing/Endorsements by dignities, highlighted the event.

Goodwill messages were presented by notable dignitaries, including; Chief Godwin Ojoba, Dr. John Ojopagogo, Malam Muibudeen Isah, CSP Oboware Paul, DPO, Orerokpe Division, Comr. Jakpa Jolomi, Comr. Gbakeji Solomon and Williams Ayoromiegha Junior Clerk.
