Residents of Igbudu and Ugbuwangue Communities in Warri have complained of being overcharged by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC.
Their complaint was made during a peaceful demonstration at the BEDC Office in Warri-Sapele Road, Warri on Wednesday April 20.
Speaking with Our Correspondent, the President of Igbudu Community, Mr. Emmanuel Ovuakporaye, said his community has been overcharged by BEDC and that they are not seeing the electricity they are paying for.
He lamented that even after paying the “overcharged bills”, they are not given the light at the appropriate time.
He said the BEDC staff who spoke with them explained that the poor power supply was a general problem faced by Effurun, Enerhen and Igbudu communities, blaming it on the damage of one of their two transformers and reassured the consumers that they were working to improve the situation.
Similarly, a resident of Ugbuwangue Community in Warri, Mr. Basil Odenore also complained that his electricity bill was inflated by 150 units.
He noted that even with the “epileptic power supply”, when he received his April 2016 electricity bill, he observed that he was charged above his regular monthly consumption by 150 units, adding that on his arrival, he noticed several consumers both from Ugbuwangue and Igbudu communities having similar issues.
Efforts by Our Correspondent to reach the PRO of BEDC Warri proved abortive as Staffers said she should go ahead and write the protesters’ side of the story.
