Anxiety is heightening at Delta State Board of Internal revenue, DBIR, over intense lobby by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s kinsmen allegedly led by the member representing Delta North in the board of DBIR, Mr. Frank Nwaogu to pressurize the governor to sack Chairman of the board, Hon. Joel Onowakpo Thomas.
Fresh Angle International learned from credible sources that even though Governor Okowa’s kinsmen are intensifying lobby to ensure Hon. Joel Onowakpo Thomas is fired, contrary to the Delta State Revenue Consolidation Law 2009, which stipulates the board’s tenure and membership, the governor’s kinsmen opinion differ on who they prefer to succeed Hon. Onowakpor Thomas whose leadership has massively increased the State Internally Generated Revenue from an average N 600 million monthly to about N 5 billion.
A Senior Official of DBIR who craved for anonymity told Our Correspondent in a chat that the Onowakpo administration has been following due process in the running of issues affecting revenue collection and remittance to the State Ministry of Finance.
According to him, it is the statutory 5% deduction from internal revenues derived by the board, which is released by the State Ministry of Finance after due process, that the Joel Onowakpo Thomas leadership has judiciously used to build DBIR offices across the State and Data Recovery Centre in Koko, Headquarter of Warri North Local Government Area as well as carry out intensive tax awareness media and public enlightenment campaigns, including the training and retraining of its staff to build their capacity.
He noted that the DBIR Chairman’s transparency has effectively blocked revenue leakages to the disadvantage of bad elements within the system.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa has reportedly axed Dr. Antonia Ashiedu, the head of Poverty Alleviation and Micro Credit Scheme in the State under former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan administration.
Dr. Okowa allegedly fired Dr. Ashiedu after listening to the presentation of her report, which appeared to have revealed some irregularities.
