Hundreds ofwomen traders in the popular Ogbe-Ijoh market in Warri Tuesday 19 protestedagainst alleged plan by Delta State government todemolish the market.
The womenwho stormed the Warri South Council Secretariat at about 9am on their way tothe state owned electronic media in Warri with placards carrying various inscriptions, accused the Delta State government of insensitivity towards their plight. Theyalleged that officials of the State Task Force on illegal structures surveyedthe market days earlier with a view to carrying out the demolition without anyalternative arrangement for them.
Whencontacted on telephone, a member of the State Task Force on illegal structures,Hon. Kenneth Efejuku debunked the alleged demolition plan.
Hon. Efejukuwhile acknowledging the right of the women to protest against perceived injustice, explained that what the state government plans to demolish are illegalstructures built around the market and not the market itself.
FreshAnglecan report that the initial construction of the Ogbe-Ijoh market by the ChiefFelix Ibru administration many years ago did not come without its ethnic andpolitical undertone.
