AUniversity Don and Medical Consultant, Dr. John Agbedia have enjoined doctors,nurses and other health workers to always remain patient and safety consciousat all times.
Hegave the charge recently during a – one - day Patient Safety AwarenessSeminar/Workshop organized by the Patient Safety Awareness Committee of DeltaState University Teaching Hospital, DELSUTH, at Oghara, Delta State.
Dr.John Agbedia who is the chairman of Patient Safety Committee in DELSUTH,stressed that doctors and nurses as well as other health workers should beproactive in their services and make sure they render quality and professionalservices in order to foster good relationship with patients. He noted that ifthere is any danger noticed in the life of any patient before an operation isbooked for such a patient, the doctor or nurse concern should report suchdanger or do proper counseling so as to avoid medical errors that could lead tothe victim’s family suing the doctor or nurse as well as leading to therevocation of the practitioner’s license.
DELSUTHLaboratory/Blood Transfusion Manager, Mr. Olajide Isaac in his presentationidentified two types of incidents: clinical and non clinical. According to him,non clinical incidents are untoward event that involves any person in thehospital or other health environment, while clinical incidents are those ofmedical errors, documentations, errors in clinical equipment, malfunction aswell as sudden deaths.
Speakingalso, Head of Pharmacy Department, DELSUTH, Dr. (Mrs.) Magdalene Oke attributedthe cause of medication errors to include ineligible hand writing of doctors,lack of current knowledge of medication use, verbal directives as well as lackof proper counseling of patients. She stressed the need for health careprofessionals to work together to ensure that patients recover fully.
Theone day workshop also featured incisive lectures by other key professionals inthe institution.
