DESOPADEC Continues De-Silting of Canals in Uvwie

The ongoing canal de-silting exercise by the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, continued Wednesday 24th June, in Uvwie Local Government Area with more blocked waterways opened up to tackle flooding.

A DESOPADEC Media reporter who monitored the exercise along Jakpa Road observed dredging work at Egbe Layout, off Sokoh Estate Road, where the swamp buggy on ground was deployed to excavate large boulders embedded deep in the canal. As the rocks were uprooted, water began gushing through immediately, restoring free flow.

By the end of the day, the swamp buggy had opened up canals on both sides of the road, expanding the scope of the clearance.

Reacting to the exercise, Chief Engineer David Odirin Egbe, Chairman of the Landlords’ Association in the area said flooding had plagued the community for years due to debris-clogged canals, noting that DESOPADEC’s evacuation of the deep-set boulders would now allow water to flow smoothly and free the community.

While thanking the State Government, he urged DESOPADEC to complete phase two of the bridge project in the area, adding that residents already partner with PSP operators to stop indiscriminate dumping of dirt in the canals.

Also speaking, a tailor in the area, Oladimeji Jelli commended DESOPADEC for the intervention, saying it will help alleviate the suffering of residents who experience flooding during rains.

Meanwhile, work at Niger Cat area was completed today with residents expressing gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and DESOPADEC for the intervention.

An Uvwie indigene, Mr. Mark Ileleji said the exercise would bring great relief to people whose houses usually get flooded during the rainy season, adding that they will now heave a sigh of relief.

In Agbarha, the three-day de-silting exercise was concluded today with the swamp buggy clearing the canal opposite Agbarha market, down to College Road.

The exercise continues tomorrow, 25th June, 2026 as the swamp buggy makes its way to Olomoro in Isoko South Local Government Area.
