The Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas, HOSTCOM, Itsekiri Chapter, has called on Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to immediately appoint representatives from Itsekiri Communities in Edo State, to the Board of Edo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, EDSOPADEC, saying the oversight of non-Itsekiris in the Board as constituted, “has serious implications for the host communities.”
Fresh Angle International can report that the call by the Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas, HOSTCOM, Itsekiri Chapter, was contained in an open letter dated Wednesday December 18 and addressed to the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
The Itsekiri body, in the letter authored by its chairman, Mr. Itse Omajugho, Secretary, Mr. Samson E. Tuoyo and Public Relations Officer, PRO, Mr. Ajemijeroma Gabriel Mene-Ejegi, noted: “We, the Itsekiri Chapter of HOSTCOM, are writing to express our deep concern about the lack of representation of Itsekiri Communities (Ethnicity) on the EDSOPADEC Board, despite being the highest producer of crude oil in Edo State.
The new constituted EDSOPADEC Board
“This oversight has serious implications for the host communities, as it denies them a voice in decision-making processes that directly impact their lives, livelihoods, and environment.
“As the highest crude oil-producing ethnicity in Edo State, we believe it is only fair that our interests are represented on the EDSOPADEC Board.
“Our contributions to the state's economy warrant adequate representation and consideration. We urge you to address this imbalance and ensure that the Itsekiri Communities (Ethnicity) have adequate representation on the EDSOPADEC Board.
“This is crucial for promoting fairness, equity, and sustainable development in the region.
“Our key demands are:
“1. Immediate appointment of representatives from Itsekiri Communities (Ethnicity) to the EDSOPADEC Board.
“2. Ensuring that the interests of the host communities are protected and promoted.
“3. Regular engagement and consultation with the host communities on matters affecting their lives, livelihoods, and environment.
“We believe that your leadership and commitment to the development of Edo State can bring about positive change.
“We look forward to a prompt resolution to this matter.”
