Patronage of non-certified practitioners attract jail term, ISPON warns as Matrix prioritizes safety ethics

The National Deputy President, Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, ISPON, Engr. Ajobo Uni Edward says operators of any company that employs non-certified safety practitioners, without passing through ISPON risk jail term, according to section 12 and section 14 of the ISPON Act.

 

Engr. Ajobo who described Matrix Energy as a leading company in Nigeria in safety compliance, made the declaration Monday April 29 at Ifie-Kporo, Warri, Delta State, during this year’s World Safety Day organized by Matrix Energy in conjunction with ISPON.

 

He admonished everyone to always apply what he called P-Preach Safety, P-Practice Safety and E-Enforce Safety in daily living and operations.

 

In his remark, the Group Head, Health Safety and Environment, HSE, Matrix Energy, Mr. Fred Olomuro, noted that Matrix Energy as a matter of policy made safety its top priority in all its operations, adding that the high premium placed on safety has earned the company great recognition and commendations from professional bodies.

According to Mr. Olomuro, the premium placed on safety by management of Matrix, made the company to invest in AGO (diesel), Premium Motor Spirit, PMS (fuel) LPG, DPK (kerosene) and Bitumen.

 

He explained that the partnership with ISPON will encourage other companies to patronize certified safety professionals in order to get better as well as safer environment.

 

The Matrix Energy HSE Boss disclosed that their target in the next 10-years is to see Matrix set pace for safety in Nigeria.

 

Delivering a lecture titled: Safety and Health and the Future of work”, Mr. Shaw Fregene, explained that safety means wise management of risk through identification, assessment, recovery and review.

 

Mr. Fregene who is the Governing Board member of ISPON stated that 6,500 people die from work related diseases everyday and 7,500 people die due to unsafe as well as unhealthy working condition daily, adding that 1,000 people die from occupational accidents daily as well.

 

While admonishing people to imbibe the act of working in safe environment always, the safety expert decried lack of electricity in Nigeria, saying it is a major challenge in terms of the cost of doing business in Nigeria.

Engr. Oyofo Isa Harriman in his brief lecture, described safety as exchange of information and enjoined everyone to have the mindset of sharing information for sustainability.

 

 

Present at the well-attended event were captains of Industries, representatives of Delta State Waste Management Board, Federal Road Safety Corps, Delta State Coordinator of Special Marshals, Comrade Dickson Amromawhe as well as students of Nana Model School, College of Commerce, Essi College and Delta Secondary School, all in Warri.
