One timeSpecial Adviser to ex President Olusegun Obasanjo, Professor F.E. Okonofua hasblamed the poor rating of Nigerian universities on the declining attitude ofNigeria academics to research.
ProfessorOkonofua who is a former Provost of College of Medicine, University of Benin,Edo State, made the declaration Wednesday October 5 at the main auditorium ofDelta State University Teaching Hospital while delivering a lecture titled,“Beyond the Ivory Tower: Propelling Academic Wisdom to Community Development”.According to him, unlike in the past when Nigerian universities devotedsubstantial proportion of their time to research, recent study have revealed “thatacademic staff of Nigerian Universities now devote 99.5% of their time toteaching and assessing of students throughout the year without definite timedesignated for research”.
TheUniversity don who has written and published over 250 publications with notableawards, posited that one of the most essential criteria now being used to rankuniversities worldwide is the extent to which they contribute to the growth anddevelopment of their communities.
Our Correspondent who participated in the seminar, reportsthat the Chief Medical Director of Delta State University Teaching Hospital,Dr. Kalu Ogbureke as well as the Provost of the Institution’s College of HealthScience, Prof. John Obodo were among distinguished academics that spoke in theone day seminar attended by medical consultants, medical practitioners as wellas students.
